since I'm new here first of all hi to everyone!
about buying GW: I had stopped playing GW about two years ago and just started playing it again ... I don't think it's gotten that much worse. people on the servers are always willing to help you out, it's still a lot of fun and I still like its gameplay and graphics - so sure, give it a try As Solar AUS said you can get the collection and if you really find you don't like it that much you won't have spent that much on it. |

I wouldnt let the naysayers discourage you. The game is very fun in its own way and is an amazing value. Since I came from WOW I can tell you that this game is different but will definately keep your interest. I would also advise you dont start on prophecies but instead on either nightfall or factions. I have really enjoyed this game and the challenge it presents. Try it out to get a feel for it.

There is a sticky at the top of this Q&A forum that explains the differences between the three campaigns (player on a budget thread). Do the trial from guildwars.com which is a really basic tutorial, then buy a campaign and play.
Check out the wiki at http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page which is also our in-game help. It is currently featuring an article on Character Creation. You can also read the stickied basic threads in the Campfire section's subforums. This will give you a clearer picture of each profession before you begin. But as you get up to eight character slots (with all three campaigns linked to one account), you can try several.

To summarize most everyone who has any intelligence in this thread:
1. It's cheap, if you're not too worried about money, just buy the whole set. 2. Play the trial if you're skeptical. 3. The game isn't dead. The players aren't rude; only the idiots on this forum are. |

The only reason it is dead is because people like you post and scare new players like this away. I bet you still play the dead game everyday don't you? It's ok. Admit it. Take it to PM if you'd like.
OP: http://www.guildwars.com/freetrial/ Try it and see if you like it. Ignore all posters like the one I quoted. |

I would first try the trial, or go to your friends house and play for a bit.
If you like it, I HIGHLY suggest you buy the Guild Wars Trilogy for $50. This comes with Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall (all stand-alone games, but you combine all the campaigns into one account). Then, maybe later you might want to buy Guild Wars: EotN (an expansion). Please don't let some of the losers on this forum discourage you from trying the game. Also, the game is far from "dead". If you have any questions, you can contact me on the forum by messaging me, or you can contact me in-game by the name of Aidin Swiftarrow. |

You SHOULD buy Guild Wars imo, it is an amazing game with a wonderful story. The PvP is also very fun.

It was kinda weird for me to make that change WoW->GW, but one year later I just can't go back to WoW.
GW is not dead. By any means. PvE is alive. American districts are almost never empty and you can see plenty of PvE guilds, full of people. If you can't form a party with just hanging around and shouting "LFG NM" you could always ask for help in the guild/ally chat. And because the community is nice, you get that help usually instantly. And PvE is fun! Don't listen to people who say "lol, no one works on his protector/guardian/vanquisher title, just make them alone, iz so simple." I've seen many (even!) vanquishing PUGs, so get used to it. PvE is not dead. PvP is fresh and balanced too. Some will say:"nooo bomberz(or some another build in the meta) suck, I quit GW. bb." <-- Those are just bored old dogs, who have forgotten you can always bring some tweaks in your build. If you can't stand the pressure of those nasty old builds, just make a new one. Experiment. Don't leave PvXwiki your only choice. And if you say you are completely bored and there is no chance something would help you stay in PvP, then just try Codex arenas. Something different and cool. Just the fact ANet implemented Codex arenas and doing constantly updates on the game means that GW is alive. The high sales mean GW is alive. And the thing community is being active, well not as active as in the beginning, but that's something absolutely normal, means GW is not dead. Not dead at all! |

2 more cents
The game is not dead (yet), but it's certainly not the game it once was. Of course, that doesn't matter to the OP - he will either like the game as he finds it, or not.
It is certainly worth trying the trial. Prophecies is so cheap, it's worth buying as a long trial. The game truly is full of rude people - about the same proportion as on these forums. However, Heroes & Henchies & Guildmates, make rude people a (relatively) non-issue. Bottom line - try it you might like it - but in some ways, don't judge GW by what you find now. |

And concerning that, I'd go with Faction first if I were you. You'll get 2 nice PvP format that are casual and the least team heavy, as well as the most enjoyable if you ask me (but I don't pvp so...) Next GWEN or nightfall if you want to continue. Prophecy is probably the best game experience, but you said you were intending on PvP-ing and GWEN/NF have those nice things we call heroes who will surely help you a GREAT deal in enjoying PvE. EDIT: OK I feel like typing. Just in case, I tought I'd give you a lil' picture of the games. Remember : in all case you have general things to do like titles. Prophecy was the first one, it was made with original idea in mind and it was made to keep people busy for a couple of year. The story will throw you form a post-apocalypse land to a swamp and farm kinda-tropical country, to a greater than life jungle, to a magic desert to a mountain to the gates of hell themselves! Basically it's vast, its immersive, you'll see a lot. I think it is generally seen as the best game story-wise (how much of that is nostalgia?). But when you've seen the story and explored all the part you didn't see the first time, you'll realise it's actually an empty box, an amazingly beautiful empty box but an empty box. At that time the end game was PvP and they didn't really put things to do there. That's why I think you should begin with another if you only buy one. Next Faction, it's kinda like prophecy, but smaller, more compact and more focused story. The setting is great, but it was meant to keep you busy a while and then move to PvP. If you buy it, I think it's for the 3 PvP modes. Then, NightFall. The first game made with PvE in mind. It has probably the deepest story, or at least the biggest one : if in prophecy you didn<t see the end untill the real end, here you'll see the "end" thrice in the game (one of them being at the end of the leveling part). It's good and give you a lot of hero, but for some reason, even after all this time, I personnally don't like the story. I think I've seen the end of the game on 2 characters. Maybe it's too big, maybe it's not "epic" enough (if proph kinda felt like the Lord of the Ring, NF feels like a contemporary conspiracy novel, deep but without the fantasy ''wow'' factor). Maybe it's just me. From gameplay it's the hardest of the first 3 games, but gives you heroes. Then GWEN. That one would give you heroes and a good playground. THat one is a mix of classic MMOs and prophecy. You're free to explore the 3(short) storylines before gaining the last part that brings back the 3 others. The 3 storylines are fun, if not long. Plus they also mae you see the world and introduce you to other things you can do aside from the story (and there is a lot to do). The last part? It has good lore, good fights, but for some reason, it tastes like cardboard. Maybe it's just me who couldn't stand the people spamming '''LFG (enter dungeon name) HM'' or ''SS LFG Glint's HM (have heroes)''. I think they were rushed to finish that part, it's not as bad as KotOR II but I'm sure it's the same. Either way, that chapter will keep you entertained for a (while with good stuff) as well giving some heroes. You should get it if you keep playing. My advice : grab faction then GWEN, then proph. You might want to give nightfall a try somewhere in there. re-edit : wow that was long Last edited by Steps_Descending; Dec 07, 2009 at 01:04 AM // 01:04.. |

I have been playing Guild Wars on and off for more than 4 years now, and I love it more than when I started. Yes it is true that ANet has their attention focused on other projects, namely Guild Wars 2, and new content will be hard to come by, but with 3 games and an expansion, you will have so much to do you won't be bored.
I find that Guild Wars is one of those games that the more you play, the more you like it. As you become a better player, areas that previously may have been unreachable (either as part of the game or because you aren't skilled enough) are revealed. |
